Shadow – IFFAM – 3rd International Film Festival and Awards ‧ Macao

Mainland China | 2018 | 116’ | DCP | Colour | Mandarin | Group: C

Director: Zhang Yimou

2018/12/14 20:30 Macao Cultural Centre – Small Auditorium

A powerful King and his people have been displaced from their homeland and long to win it back. The King is wild and ambitious, but his motives and methods are mysterious. His great commander is a visionary who longs to win the ultimate battle. But all is not as it seems. The commander himself hides in the inner recesses of the palace walls and plots in secret, while his body double – or “shadow” – is present in court. He is a commoner plucked from obscurity because of his resemblance to the commander. Around him, the inexorable forces of power, fate and history swirl.

Zhang Yimou

Zhang Yimou burst onto the world scene in 1988 when he won the Golden Bear at Berlin for his first feature Red Sorghum (1987). Zhang’s films include intimate personal stories set in the Chinese countryside such as Red Sorghum (1987), The Road Home (1999), and Raise the Red Lantern (1991); martial arts dramas such as Hero (2002) and House of Flying Daggers (2004); works To Live (1994) and Coming Home (2014) that movingly chronicle China’s 20th century social traumas; and epic blockbusters such as The Great Wall (2016) starring Matt Damon. Shadow had its world premiere at Venice and Toronto this September.
