When middle-aged bank clerk Sheila Woolchapel is sold a strikingly beautiful red dress at a local department store, it boosts her morale in the face of her thankless job, her uncommunicative teenage son and his nightmarish girlfriend. Wearing the dress, she even meets a man she likes through the lonely hearts columns. But that is where her luck ends. The dress starts to exact a heavy toll, starting when she puts it in the washing machine. The mysterious salesperson at the store Miss Luckmoore refuses to take the dress back and, to her own great cost, Sheila finds that it is impossible to destroy.
