When white collar worker Ye Lanqiu refuses to offer her seat to an old man on the bus, her actions set off a chain of events that threaten to bring down a giant conglomerate, destroy multiple relationships and lose people their jobs. But even while the internet rants at Ye’s rudeness to the old man, they are unaware that she has just found out she has cancer. In today’s soundbite world, perception quickly becomes reality and judgments based on limited facts quickly spread, without regard for the truth or the damage they can cause. The same technology that connects us can be used to tear us apart.

Chen Kaige

One of the most influential Chinese directors in the last 50 years, Chen Kaige was a leading figure in the Fifth Generation of Chinese cinema and is the only Chinese film-maker to have won the Palme d’Or in Cannes, for Farewell My Concubine. His first film Yellow Earth (1984) remains a landmark of cinema and immediately established Chen as an internationally renowned name. King Of The Children (1988) and Life On A String (1991) were both selected for competition at Cannes, a section he won two years later. His filmography also includes The Big Parade (1985), Temptress Moon (1996), The Emperor And The Assassin (1999), Together (2002), Caught In The Web (2012) and last year’s award-winning Tang Dynasty epic Legend Of The Demon Cat (2017).
